What is Colour Theory and why use it in your home?

Colour theory looks at how colours interact with one another in a design or an overall environment. It’s commonly used by graphic designers, artists and interior designers and decorators when creating a piece of design or art. Colour theory uses the colour wheel (and where a colour sits on it) to help guide design decisions. Here at FuzzYard, our designers use this tool every day! 

Colour theory can be used in your home to create an aesthetically pleasing environment that makes you feel at home. Colours in your home also contribute to the feel of coziness or openness depending on how they’re used. 

Here are 4 colour theory principles that you can use in your home to and match your FuzzYard life bedding and apparel seamlessly. Make your home look like it came straight out of a magazine!

Monochromatic

Monochromatic colour schemes use one colour, but in varied hues/brightnesses, for example light grey, mid grey and dark grey as shown in the image below.  This creates a harmonious look and feel for your space and is one of the easiest colour theories to apply.

Complementary

Complementary colour schemes PAIR colours from opposite sides of the colour wheel to create a contrasting pallete. Some examples are green and red or blue and orange. When these colours are paired, their intensity is enhanced by one another and an energetic and dynamic look and feel is achieved.

You can use complementary colours to create contrast and introduce more colours into your home.

Accent Colours

Although not technically using colour theory, accent colours are a great way to add some pop to your home. Selecting one colour alongside your main colour palette is a great way to create contrast and is often used alongside greys or neutral colour palettes to add some brightness to a room.
